GLP-1s Approved for Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) treatment shifted in 2023 when first of its kind therapy was approved by the FDA. Prior to the disease-modifying therapies hitting the market, there had been few new treatment options to help patients maintain their quality of life and slow disease progression after AD diagnosis.

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 used to treat diabetes, is currently in phase 3 clinical trials as another possible medication class to treat mild cases of AD for patients at least 55 years of age. GLP-1s may help with the neuroinflammation and insulin resistance believed to contribute to AD symptoms and could have an expanded indication for treating Alzheimer’s disease as early as September 2025. This approval would increase treatment access to many patients that did not qualify for treatment with the products currently available and continue pushing up the rising costs within the GLP-1 drug class.

Understanding the Xolair Biosimilar

In March 2025, Celltrion achieved a significant milestone by obtaining U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Omlyclo (omalizumab-igec), the first omalizumab biosimilar in the United States. Notably, Omlyclo received an interchangeability designation from the FDA, allowing it to be substituted for Xolair without prescriber intervention. This development holds significant potential for increasing accessibility and affordability of this important therapy.
The introduction of a biosimilar to omalizumab carries several important implications:

  • Increased Accessibility: Biosimilars typically enter the market at a lower price point compared to the reference product. This can make this potentially life-changing therapy more accessible to a wider range of patients who may have previously faced
    financial barriers.
  • Enhanced Competition: The presence of a biosimilar fosters competition in the pharmaceutical market. This competition can drive down the overall cost of treatment, benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.
  • Greater Treatment Options: Having more treatment options available allowshealthcare providers to tailor treatment plans more effectively to individual patientneeds and preferences.

While the biosimilar may not be available immediately, its eventual introduction could lead to more affordable access.

National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the impact of stress and how it affects both our physical and mental well-being. The workplace, in particular, is often a significant source of stress, with job pressures, incivility, and conflict escalating stress levels. When stress is left unmanaged, it can contribute to serious health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Additionally, workplace stress can negatively affect productivity and conflict resolution, further intensifying stress.

Fostering a civil, inclusive workplace is crucial to alleviating stress. By promoting kindness and respect, organizations can reduce stress-related outcomes, boosting both individual well-being and overall effectiveness. Resources like employee assistance programs, coaching, and mediation services are available to help employees and managers cope with stress and resolve conflicts. It’s a reminder that creating a supportive work environment can help mitigate stress and enhance productivity.

Celebrating Arbor Day!

Arbor Day is a special day dedicated to celebrating the importance of trees and the environment. First observed in 1872, Arbor Day encourages people to plant trees and raise awareness about the many benefits they provide. It is traditionally celebrated on the last Friday of April in the United States, though the date can vary by region depending on the best time for tree planting.

As noted by the Farmers’ Almanac, trees play a crucial role in improving air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and combating climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and offer habitats for wildlife. The Farmers’ Almanac also highlights a variety of tree species suitable for different climates, such as sturdy oaks, vibrant dogwoods, and colorful maples, making it easy for everyone to participate in planting.

Whether you plant a tree in your yard or join a local event, Arbor Day serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and nurturing our environment for future generations.
